Golovin has studied architecture and painting at Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under Makovsky, Polenov and Prianishnikov (1881-1886), and then in Paris under Blanche (1889), Collain and Meerson (1897). He has worked in Moscow until 1901 and then in St Petersburg From 1894 the artist participated in exhibitions including MTKh (Moscow Fellowship of Artists) , MOLKh(Moscow Society of Art Lovers), SRKh (Union of Russian Artists) , World of Art. Traveled to Italy, Spain and France (1895). Golovin designed for the Petersburg Imperial Theatres (1899-1917), and prepared costumes for performances in Moscow and Leningrad. Also designed the drop-curtains for the Mariinsky Theatre, St Petersburg and the Odessa Theatre. Made Sketches of a Russian Dining Room for Yakunchikova (1898), designed the Russian pavilion at the International Exhibition in Paris (1900) with Korovin, produced ceramic panels for the façade of the Metropol Hotel, Moscow (1900) with Vrubel, and book illustrations. His work was shown in Paris (1900) and Brussels (1928). Also one-man shows in Moscow (1940, 1956, 1969, 1963) and Leningrad (1940, 1956).
