Russian painter. In 1764 he was enrolled at the newly opened Educational College attached to the St Petersburg Academy of Arts, and he later studied in the academy’s landscape class, in 1776 under Semyon Fyodorovich Shchedrin (1745–1804). On completing his academy studies in 1778 he was acclaimed the best student of his year, and he received the major gold medal for landscape painting. In 1779 he received a grant to study in Rome, where he remained based for the rest of his life. During the first years of his stay in Italy, Matveyev copied works by the German landscape painter Philipp Hackert, who also advised him.
In 1807 Matveyev was awarded the title of Academician in St Petersburg for his painting "View of the Environs of Naples".
